Jake Riles was one of the original four main characters in Nowhere Boys. His elemental power was Earth, and he was portrayed by Matt Testro.

Personality[]

Prior to the start of the series, Jake was a headstrong, arrogant jock who bullied weaker kids, along with his former friends Trent and Dylan. His victims included Felix, Andy, and Mike. He experienced family troubles due to his parents being divorced, and thinks of his father as a loser, but he is very protective of his mother and would like to please her, due to them normally feeling like they only had each other.

Over the course of the first season, Jake began to care more about the people that he bullied in the past, especially Mike, who gave him a plush unicorn as a present after Jake defended him from bullies. He is also shown to care deeply for his mother and helps her whenever she needs.

Powers and abilities[]

Having earth as his element, Jake had the power to cause ground tremors. Initially, they happened when he was emotional, but he later learned to control them. Jake later learned to create fissures in the ground, and when enraged, he was able to form a deep hole with no visible bottom.

Prior to discovering his powers, Jake showed the ability to find someone's hiding spot in one go.

Outside of magic, Jake was exceptionally fit and was one of the top sports players in his school, showing skills in football and basketball throughout the series. Jake was known to use his size and strength to bully weaker students.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Before the group was forgotten, Jake Riles was the son of Gary and Sarah Riles. Jake and his mother lived in a small house. Jake’s mother worked extra shifts constantly at Scaly Jim's Fish and Chips Shop in order to get them a bigger house and a car. Jake loved his mother very much, and took every opportunity to do things for her, care for her and generally make her life easier. Jake would normally be seen with Trent and Dylan, but would also talk to Sam in the corridors. He and the football team would egg Felix's house for good luck.

Bremin Forest Excursion[]

Jake was hiding behind the sofa along with his mum from Phil Mason, the real estate agent, as they were late to pay the rent again. After some discussion, Sarah confronted Phil, prompting Jake to walk off to school. When arriving, Jake met up with Dylan and Trent, and they mockingly teased Felix and Ellen. He seemed very disappointed when paired up in an orienteering team with Felix and Andy; calling them 'these two netballers'. He treated the hike as some sort of race, and when he noticed the other team in the distance, he agreed to use a so-called shortcut. This led to a dead-end, and Jake was accidentally pushed off a cliff. Everyone then landed painfully on the rock floor.

Stranded in another dimension[]

The group tried to find a way back to civilization. Jake appeared very annoyed during this event, mocking Felix and Andy even more than usual. He also seemed to act as the group's leader; Jake led the way through the forest and called out to see if anyone could hear them. His efforts eventually worked, finding a way onto the path, but the group are chased by a furious twister. They found Roland and he agreed to drive the group back to Bremin.

After this, Jake was intent on finding his mum, even when nothing was looking promising. He left the other guys to search for her. Jake noticed his mum wasn't home, but managed to gain access inside by using the back door, as his key didn't work on the front door. Jake checked if his mum was home, but when a biker came out of the garage, Jake quickly fled. He then talked to Telly, his neighbour, but he had no idea who he was or what Jake was trying to communicate to him. Jake stole his bike (despite its size) and rode off. Wondering where his mother was, he checked Scaly Jim's Fish and Chips Shop, his mother's work. The store owner had no idea what Jake was on about, and asked him to leave unless he was buying food, in which Jake left hesitantly. Jake met Andy soon after, and he described how his family had no idea who he was. Sam joined them soon after and also described his tale, but Jake just called it 'sad' and rode off. Jake also tried to explain his ordeal to the police, but when he realized that his lazy, loser father was now a successful police officer, he fled before Gary could even see him.

When Jake incorrectly realized that Phil must have used this chance to get revenge on Sarah, he quickly turned around to Phil's work place. Jake arrived at the real estate agency, walked past the counter, absolutely ignoring the woman behind it, and charged into Phil's office. After Phil had no idea who he was and threatened to call the police, Jake got enraged and left. As he took a breath outside, his mother, with a completely different hairstyle and dress sense, walked out and accidentally hit Jake in the shoulder. She apologized and got into her car and drove off. After recovering from his shock, Jake rode after her and approached her at the front of grand house. Jake asked her what had happened, but Sarah has no clue what he was talking about. Mr. Bates walked out to join Sarah and Jake was informed they were married. Not knowing how to react, Jake quickly got on his bike and rode off. Eventually, Jake found himself forced to return the bike to Telly and meet up with the other three boys.

Restoring Demon attacks[]

Return to Real World[]

Search for Andy[]

Jake overall blamed Felix for Andy's disappearance and would have continued if not for Sam constantly easing the tension the two had. He argued that it was probably Felix doing some magic that backfired again.

Jake befriended Saskia, a new student at the school. He trusted her completely, even when the rest of the group blamed her for the loss of the talisman.

Jake's father from the other universe accidentally traveled to the Real World, and Jake and Saskia decided to keep this a secret from the rest of the group, but when Sam found out, Felix was told.

Saskia was later revealed to be a golem, which meant that she never really existed. Jake was extremely upset by this and angry at Felix, who pointed out Saskia was a golem.

Jake was even more upset and angry over Felix giving Alice the talisman in order to save Oscar from falling from a tree.

Later, Jake and Felix start arguing over the latter giving Alice the talisman in order to save Oscar from falling from the tree, causing Sam to get enraged and snap them to stop. He then says that they need to figure what to do with Roland, as he saw Oscar running and will not stop trying to prove that they are responsible for Andy's disappearance. Felix gets an idea to wipe Roland's memory, but Jake reminds him that the talisman is destroyed. Oscar suddenly mentions the magic tablet that Alice had used on him. Sam doubts that Alice could give them the tablet, but Jake believes that she wasn't going to do it voluntarily, and heads off to Phoebe and Alice's house.

Jake went to Alice and Phoebe and angrily asked them what they did. They argued that the love he and Saskia had was the cause for her demise as Saskia was never meant to be distracted and fall in love. Using his elemental power, Jake caused a hole to appear in the garden that seemingly had no end, showing how enraged he was and how much strength he has.

Battle against Tegan[]

Jake, along with Sam, reluctantly agree to stay and help Felix and Andy split the talisman. Felix states his uncertainty about splitting the talisman, to which Jake remarks that he didn't seem worried when he let a demon loose on them. Along with the other three boys, Jake casts a spell to split the talisman. Jake, at first, tries to leave, but Felix pleads with him to take one piece of the talisman. Jake reluctantly agrees.

At home, Jake wraps tape around a trophy, then turns to his reflection in the mirror, where he tells himself that he can win a football game without magic. He puts his piece of the talisman on his shelf, then takes his jacket and heads out.

During a football game, Jake is tackled down by a rival football player, who steals the football from him, causing him to use his elemental power to knock him down and steal back the football. Jake kicks the football to his football teammate, but Sam uses his elemental power to send the football flying into the air. Jake confronts Sam about it and they start shoving each other, causing Felix to intervene and tell them to stop. He tells them about the girls also having elemental powers, then asks who the new girl is. Sam asks if he was referring to Tegan, who he says was the one who said Jake used his elemental power on him, causing Jake to realize that Tegan has played them.

In the lair, Jake talks with the boys and Oscar about Tegan. Felix mentions the ley lines where they opened the book and split the talisman, which led to Tegan's arrival, leading Andy to wonder if they brought her there. This leads Jake to remark to Sam that Felix and Andy are finishing each other's sentences. Oscar explains about that if chaos separates from order, the spiral of destruction will lead to the destruction of every world in the multiverse. Felix decides that they need to search the book to find something Tegan is afraid of. Jake decides to return home to talk to his mother and get his piece of the talisman.

At home, Jake is getting ready to head out when his mother comes into his room to talk to him. Their talk is interrupted by Bates, who tells Sarah that the bourguignon that he made is ready. Taking his piece of the talisman from his shelf, Jake says goodbye to his mother and heads out.

Jake goes with Sam to Felix's house, where they knock on the window to alert him, Andy, and Oscar to their presence.

When the boys get to Felix's house, Andy reveals that because Tegan is Chaos, they need to go into Negative Space to recruit Bear, who is Order. Sam questions if they will get stuck there like Andy did. Andy replies that Tegan can't the book if they take it with them. Jake says that they need to battle Tegan in order to protect the girls. The other boys disperse so Felix can cast a spell to open a portal to Negative Space, which Sam jumps into. Then a shadow creature appears, forcing Jake to escape from it along with Felix and Andy, while Sam goes to rescue Phoebe, Alice, and Bear.

When hiding from the shadow creatures along with Felix and Andy, Jake is forced to flee from the shadow creatures along with Felix and Andy, only to be confronted by Ellen and Tegan, who shows Ellen a vision of herself and Andy. She surrounds Ellen with the shadow creatures as payback for her betrayal. Felix threatens to burn the book unless she lets Ellen go, but Tegan calls his bluff. Jake tells Felix to throw him the book. Felix does so, and Jake attempts to run away with it, but a shadow creature touches him from behind, causing him to collapse. It takes the book from Jake and gives it to Tegan. Ellen approaches Jake, who tells her that the shadow creature sapped his energy. Tegan starts ripping out the pages from the book, much to Felix's dismay. Ellen uses smoke to cover their escape.

While running along with Felix, Andy, and Ellen, Jake sees the neighborhood under Tegan's control, then suggests that they do something to defeat Tegan, which Felix and Ellen agree with. Felix gets a call from Oscar, who tells him, Jake, Andy, and Ellen that there is something in the lair, prompting Jake to head to the school along with Felix, Andy, and Ellen.

While waiting for Felix to cast the spell along with Andy and Ellen, Jake remarks to them that it sucks to not do magic together. Felix calls them inside. Along with Andy and Ellen, Jake is shown a spell embodied in a wall. The four are approached by Oscar and Ken, who reveals that he created the lair and defeated Tegan with that spell when he was younger. He then says that the spell requires the sacrifice of their elemental powers, which Jake reluctantly accepts along with Felix and Andy.

When Jake comes out of the school along with the other three boys, Ellen, and Ken, he sees the chaos symbol in the sky. Jake, along with the other three boys, Ellen, and Ken, are approached by Sam and Phoebe, who have arrived to take them to the field where Tegan is.

Jake and the other four boys cast a spell to negate the wormhole and free everyone from Tegan's control. Then after piecing together the talisman, they are about to send Tegan back to Negative Space, when Bear appears and teleports the talisman in Felix's hand away. He explains to Jake and the other four boys that he betrayed Tegan, who he reveals to be his sister, to become the Guardian. Along with the other four boys, Jake witnesses Bear and Tegan hug and teleport away.

Jake, along with the other three boys, Ellen, and Viv, are walking when he joins the other three boys in a group hug. When Mia approaches Sam on her bike, Jake encourages Sam to talk to Mia.

Season 4. Battle For Negative Space[]

Four years later in an alternate universe where magic is illegal and deemed dangerous by the world, Jake is a prison guard in the facility where elementals are locked up and brainwashed into believing they have to give up magic.

Jake first appears in an interrogation cell to get answers from Luke and Nicco.
